Jaisalmer bus fire: Jammed door trapped passengers; bodies being verified

At least 20 passengers were burnt alive, and 15 others sustained critical burn injuries after the private bus travelling to Jodhpur caught fire, barely 10 minutes after it left Jaisalmer

A jammed door in the AC sleeper bus that caught fire near Jaisalmer was the main reason for the high number of casualties, police said on Wednesday (October 15, 2025).

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma reviewed the rescue and medical response and called the incident “deeply tragic”.

Twenty passengers were burnt alive, and 15 others sustained critical burn injuries after the private bus travelling to Jodhpur on Tuesday (October 14, 2025) afternoon caught fire, barely 10 minutes after it left Jaisalmer.

Kailash Dan, Additional SP, Jaisalmer, said the fire caused the bus door to get locked, preventing passengers from escaping.

“Most of the bodies were found in the aisle of the bus, which shows that people tried to escape but couldn’t because the door was stuck,” he told PTI.

The bus caught fire near the Army War Memorial. The Army personnel reached the site quickly and joined the rescue operations. The door had to be pried open, while a few passengers managed to escape by breaking windows. Water from a passing tanker was also used to control the blaze.

Jaisalmer SP Abhishek Shivhare said that 19 charred bodies were recovered from the bus and 16 critically injured were rushed to hospital in Jodhpur.

One passenger died on the way to Jodhpur.

“The bodies were sent to Jodhpur for DNA sampling and identification. They will be handed over to families after matching is confirmed by the Forensic Science Laboratory,” he said.

Police officials said that the number of people inside the bus at the time of the incident is being verified.

“Twenty people have died, and 15 are undergoing treatment. No missing person has been reported yet. We are verifying the number of the persons. CCTV footage from the bus’ departing point and the route has been collected and is being examined,” the Additional SP said.

He said that the forensics teams have been inspecting the site since last night.

“Initial indications suggest a short circuit, though other possibilities like firecrackers in the bus are also being probed,” he said.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, as soon as he received information about the incident on Tuesday (October 14, 2025) evening, ended a scheduled meeting in Jaipur midway and started coordinating with officials present on the ground.

At the meeting attended by Ministers Kirori Lal Meena, Gautam Dak, and senior officials, Sharma informed everyone that due to the seriousness of the situation, he would be heading to Jaisalmer.

The Chief Minister directed authorities to establish a green corridor to facilitate the smooth transfer of the injured from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur for advanced treatment,” an official said.

Mr. Sharma reached Jaisalmer at night and visited the site. He acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of the Indian Army and local civilians in rescue and relief operations, the official said.

The Chief Minister then proceeded to Jodhpur and met with families of the victims. He instructed doctors to provide the best possible medical care to the injured and reviewed the availability of critical care infrastructure in the burn unit, including ventilators, oxygen support, ICU beds, and essential medicines.

A dedicated medical monitoring team has been deployed to ensure round-the-clock care in Jodhpur. Mr. Sharma also directed that the families of the injured be provided with proper accommodation, meals, and all necessary support within the hospital premises.

He spoke with local legislators, party workers, and administrative officials in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, appealing to them to assist in relief efforts. He also instructed Cabinet Minister Madan Dilawar to remain in Jodhpur to oversee the situation.

Rescue officials described the bus as a “fireball” that gave passengers little time to react. It was a newly registered vehicle, which was only on its fourth journey. The bus had departed Jaisalmer around 3 p.m. and was scheduled to pick up more passengers along the route.

A policeman, citing eyewitness accounts, said that a loud blast was heard from the rear of the bus, believed to be from the AC compressor. The resulting blaze was intensified by diesel, AC gas, and fibre-based interiors.

“There was only one door on the bus, which got jammed. Most passengers could not escape. The Army recovered what bodies they could, but some were burnt to ashes beyond recognition,” Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar said.

Primary investigation reveals that the bus had no emergency exit, no window hammers and had a narrow aisle that trapped passengers. Once the wiring caught fire, the automatic door-lock system activated, sealing off escape.

Several bodies were found piled on top of one another inside the bus.

The injured include two children and four women. Some have up to 70% burn injuries. All were first taken to a government hospital in Jaisalmer before being referred to Jodhpur.

Jaisalmer District Collector Pratap Singh Nathawat said the rescue operation was launched immediately. “All 19 recovered bodies have been sent to Jodhpur for DNA-based identification,” he said.

India message to China on Taiwan: Avoid actions to change status quo

In its first statement since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei 10 days ago which angered China and led to PLA military drills, India on Friday called for “exercise of restraint” and to avoid “unilateral actions to change (the) status quo” over Taiwan.

It did not spell out the One-China policy, and instead said that the government’s “relevant” policies are “well-known and consistent” and “do not require reiteration”.

Responding to questions on India’s talks with NATO, Arindam Bachi, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, said,  “India and NATO have kept in touch in Brussels at different levels for quite some time now. This is part of our contacts with various stakeholders on global issues of mutual interest.”

The Indian Express reported Thursday that New Delhi held its first political dialogue with NATO in Brussels on December 12, 2019. The talks were attended by senior officials including from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Defence.

To questions on the Taiwan issue, Bagchi said, “Like many other countries, India too is concerned at recent developments. We urge the exercise of restraint, avoidance of unilateral actions to change status quo, de-escalation of tensions and efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.”

On the question of the One-China policy, the MEA spokesperson said, “India’s relevant policies are well-known and consistent. They do not require reiteration.”

India does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan yet as it adheres to the One-China policy.

Without naming China, New Delhi also called Beijing’s blocking of the proposal to designate  Pakistan-based Abdul Rauf Azhar as a global terrorist as “unfortunate”.

Referred to as Abdul Rauf Asghar in UN documents, he is the brother of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar and deputy chief of the proscribed terror group.

“We note with regret that a ‘technical hold’ has been placed on the listing proposal for Abdul Rauf Asghar. It is unfortunate that when it comes to our collective battle against terrorism, the international community has been unable to speak in one common voice,” Bagchi said.

He quoted Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, who, during the UNSC Open Debate on August 9, had flagged this concern categorically to all members: “There should be no double standards in dealing with terrorists.”

“The practice of placing holds and blocks without giving any justification must end. It is most regrettable that genuine and evidence based listing proposals pertaining to some of the most notorious terrorists in the world are being placed on hold. Double standards and continuing politicization have rendered the credibility of the Sanctions Regime at an all time low,” Kamboj said.

Bagchi said that Abdul Rauf was actively involved in terrorist attacks such as hijacking of Indian Airlines aircraft IC-814 in 1999, the Parliament terror attacks in 2001 and the terror attacks at the Indian Army camp in Kathua in 2014 and at the IAF base in Pathankot in 2016.

Abdul Rauf, he said, has been proscribed under Indian and US laws already, and therefore “the placing of the “technical hold” against such wanted terrorist is most uncalled for.”

“India will continue pursuing its principled position of bringing these terrorists to justice, including through the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Regime,” he said.

On the Chinese Foreign Ministry saying that it was “completely unjustified for certain countries to cite the so-called security concerns” to pressure Sri Lanka — in the context of the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry asking China to “defer” the arrival of the Yuan Wang 5, a military vessel, at its southern port of Hambantota – the MEA spokesperson said, “We reject the insinuations in the statement about India. Sri Lanka is a sovereign country and makes its own independent decisions.”

He said as far as India-Sri Lanka relations are concerned, “you are aware of the centrality that Sri Lanka occupies in our Neighbourhood First policy. India has extended this year itself an unprecedented support of over US$ 3.8 billion for ameliorating the serious economic situation in Sri Lanka. India also is fully supportive of its democracy, stability and economic recovery.”

On India-China relations, Bagchi said, “We have consistently emphasized the necessity of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interests as a basis for the development of ties.”

“With regard to our security concerns, this is the sovereign right of every country. We will make the best judgment in our own interest. This naturally takes into account the prevailing situation in our region, especially in the border areas,” he said.

Maharashtra Political Crisis News Live Updates: ‘No orders issued by CM or HMO to withdraw security of rebel MLAs,’ says state Home Minister

Maharashtra Political Crisis News Live Updates:  Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil denied claims made by rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Saturday that the protection of Shiv Sena MLAs has been withdrawn by the Maharashtra Chief Minister and HMO. “There have been on orders issues either by the CM or the Home Ministry to withdraw the security of any MLA. Allegations being levelled to this effect are mischievous and false,” Patil said.

The Shiv Sena has sent the names of four more rebel MLAs to the Maharashtra Assembly deputy speaker for initiating action of disqualification against them, a senior leader told PTI. The party will also issue notices to 16 MLAs of the rebel faction and ask them to respond by Monday, Sena MP Arvind Sawant here on Friday. The four legislators whose names were forwarded to the deputy speaker were Sanjay Raymulkar, Chiman Patil, Ramesh Bornare and Balaji Kalyankar, he said.

Taking dissident Shiv Sena MLAs head on, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday accused them of betrayal and challenged them to try and wean away common party workers as he slammed rebel leader Eknath Shinde and also tore into the BJP, saying it wants to “finish off” his outfit and does not want to share its Hindu votebank.

Indian Besan Laddu Recipe | Besan Ke Laddu |बेसन के लड्डू हलवाईके जैसे

Ingredients

Besan – 500 gms

Turmeric – 5 gms

Ghee – 375 gms

Sugar fine grain or Burra – 1.25 kg

Almonds & Pista chopped – handful

Besan Ladoo - No one can resist the smell of Besan when you cook with ghee. No festivity is complete without a methai, and nothing compares if it is home made.

Method

How to make Besan Ladoo

For the mixture:

1- Add 175 gms of ghee in the wok and melt it.

2- Add 250 gms of chickpea flour in melted ghee on the low-medium flame.

3- Roast while continuously stirring it to avoid lumps.

4- Add more 1 tsp of ghee if the mixture appears dry.

5- Sprinkle some water to make the mixture uneven.

6- Again, roast it until water disappears.

7- Switch off the flame but, don’t stop stirring for 1-2 minutes.

8- Pour the mixture in another bowl to slightly cool it quickly.

9- Dry roast ¼ cup of Muskmelon seeds until they expand and their colour changes.

10- Pour them in a separate bowl to avoid them from over roasting.

11- Keep on stirring the mixture in intervals also.

12- Touch and check the temperature of the mixture.

13-  Add 250 gms of Tagar, roasted Muskmelon seeds, 1 tsp of coarsely grounded green cardamoms and 1 smaller sized grated Nutmeg in the mixture.

14- Mix all the ingredients properly

Suggestions:

1- You can increase or decrease the quantity of sugar according to your taste.

2- The thicker sized chickpea flour is required to make these Ladoos.

3- If you are using tagar which is available in the market then, use a ½ proportion of the finer sized boora and a ½ proportion of the larger sized boora.

4- Cook sugar syrup until it appears white.

5- If clods appear then, break them and filter on a strainer.

6- The ratio of Ghee, Tagar, and Chickpea flour should be equal for the Ladoo.

7- 1 cup of chickpea flour is equal to 125 grams.

8- While roasting continuously stir Chickpea flour to the formation of lumps.

9- Press and stir the mixture in case lumps appear.

10- Ladoo sticks to the throat only when it has not properly roasted.

11- Roast until a soothing aroma arises from the mixture and it appears darks too.

12- Roast Chickpea flour on the low flame for a while to avoid its raw taste.

13- Save some quantity of Ghee for the further process.

14- Chickpea flour expands by adding water.

15- Switch off the flame but, don’t stop stirring to avoid it burning from the bottom.

16- The mixture loses its consistency when Tagar is mixed in the warm mixture.

17- You can add any dry fruit in ladoos but make sure they are roasted to increase its shelf life.

18- You can make ladoo of your desired size.

19- In case Ladoo is still sticky then, store them in the refrigerator for a while.

20- You can add ¼ tsp turmeric powder in 250 grams of Ladoo for better colour or you can add the food colour.

21- The ladoo splits when Tgar has not mixed in the warm mixture. You can avoid this issue by adding some amount of the melted ghee in it.
