2013 Marakkanam violence: six get life term

A Sessions Court here on Wednesday convicted six persons of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment in connection with a violent clash between cadres of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Dalits in Marakkanam that led to the death of PMK worker on April 25, 2013.

The clash broke out at Marakkanam, a coastal town in Villupuram district, among those proceeding to attend the Chithra Pournami Youth Peruvizha, organised by the Vanniyar Sangam, parent organisation of the PMK, at Mamallapuram following which half a dozen tenements, buses and shops were torched. One Selvaraj of PMK was found dead at Kazhikuppam bus stand.

CB CID police investigated the case and filed charge sheet against six persons — M.Manikandan, V.Raghu, E.Senthilkumar, S.Parinathan, M.Raji, M.Sekar.

At the conclusion of trial, II Additional District and Sessions Court P.Selva Muthukumari held them guilty and convicted them for offences including murder, possession of deadly weapons and rioting.

Terming the case as the rarest of rare, the judge sentenced them to life imprisonment besides imposing fines on them.
